Unlikely Radicals: The Story of the Adams Mine Dump War

Unlikely Radicals: The Story of the Adams Mine Dump War

Date: Tuesday, April 9, 2013
Time: 6:30pm until 8:30pm
Location: Chat Noir Books
Come out on Tuesday April 9th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and meet author Charlie Angus as he reads from his new book "Unlikely Radicals: The Story of the Adams Mine Dump War".
Unlikely Radicals: The Story of the Adams Mine Dump War
Author: Charlie Angus
Publisher: Between the Lines

About the Book:
For twenty-two years politicians and businessmen pushed for the Adams Mine landfill as a solution to Ontario’s garbage disposal crisis. This plan to dump millions of tonnes of waste into the fractured pits of the Adams Mine prompted five separate civil resistance campaigns by a rural region of 35,000 in Northern Ontario. Unlikely Radicals traces the compelling history of the First Nations people and farmers, environmentalists and miners, retirees and volunteers, Anglophones and Francophones who stood side by side to defend their community with mass demonstrations, blockades, and non-violent resistance.
“A Grisham-like political thriller with the feel-good accents of a Frank Capra movie.”
- Quill & Quire
“Unlikely Radicals is a fast-paced page-turner as Angus leads us through the epic battle between the rich and mighty and a community united by justice. It is also hysterically funny and educational.”
- Olivia Chow, MP
"Although Unlikely Radicals reads like a piece of fiction with its villains and heroes and backroom political machinations, it is not. Rather, it is the story of a small band of courageous people—stewards of their land and water—who stood up to some very powerful forces and won, because their cause was right. Charlie Angus was there on the frontline from the beginning and tells a spellbinding story. I loved this book."
- Maude Barlow, Council of Canadians

International Tabletop Day at Chat Noir Books

International TableTop Day

Date: Thursday March 30th 2013
Time: 10am - 1pm
Location: Chat Noir Books

In honor of our newly expanded Game Room(ok not so newly but still...) and Geek & Sundry (The Guild, TableTop, Written By A Kid) we are going to celebrating International TableTop Day as a reminder to spend more time and strengthen the bonds with the people who matter most, our friends and family, by playing games together.

Tabletop gaming promotes many positive social and cognitive benefits like increased communication, team work, planning, and is an excellent stress relieving activity for all ages.

International TableTop Day also represents the one year anniversary of the launch of the hit show TableTop, hosted by Wil Wheaton (Star Trek, Big Bang Theory, Leverage). TableTop has been a well-reported boon to the international gaming community, not only creating whole new generations of tabletop gamers, but also providing a rising tide that supports many game stores and publishers.

So come out and help us celebrate International TableTop Day on March 30th!
