That time of the year
We have officially hit the time of year where Paul and I start the tug-of-war over the store temperature. He prefers to keep the store somewhere sub-zero while I don't enjoy having to dig out my winter sweaters to deal with air conditioning. As I sit here typing I am considering finding such a sweater - or maybe some mitts... Bea, can you make me some summer themed fingertipless mitts to wear in the store? hehehehe
It's also BookExpo Canada time - our big industry trade show is this weekend so Paul and I will be away until next Wed. I have packed everything humanly possible into a suitcase and carry bag - Paul did ask at one point if he should go get me the kitchen sink. I took that as a sign to stop adding things to my bag...I think I'm ready. I'm one of those people who HATES having to buy an extra thingamagigy because I didn't pack one and now realise that I do in fact need it.
Mark and Carissa will be doing their best to keep the store running and in one piece while we're gone. Please be nice to them! See you next week. ;)

Saturday June 28, 2008
In keeping with the Biker's Fest theme we will be hosting award winning motorcycle author and journalist Max Burns. Max has been nominated for 10 Canadian National Magazine Awards, winning two gold, three silver, and five honorable mentions.
He also received four Motorcycle Awards of Excellence, in 1994 for The Winged Wheel Patch, 2003 for On Any Wednesday, 2004 for Around the Bend (again), and 2006 for These are a few of my favourite roads.
Check Out Max's Site
Max will be on hand, chatting and signing books. He will also be presenting From the books of Max, where he talks about his writing, his adventures, his books, and whatever else he wants to. Refreshments will be served following the presentation, from Boreal Cuisine, with plenty of time to chat with Max and keep him busy so that he doesn't eat everything before you get a taste of the northern goodies. Good words, good food; what could be better? 4:00 pm - 6:00pm.
But - there's more than just bikers to see June 27-28. Summerfest is offering up some great family friendly fun downtown. Come see Clifford the big red dog at 11:00am in store. There is entertainment on the main stage all day Friday and Saturday - circus performers, face painting, skateboard comp, sidewalk sales - tons of stuff to see and do! Come down town and check it out!! All sponsored by your local NewLikseard BIA.

Thank You Joseph Boyden
A great Big Thank You to Joseph and Mary Boyden.
Joseph Boyden was here on Tuesday and read chapters from his International Bestseller Three Day Road and his new novel which comes out in September Through Black Spruce
The event went well and Joseph was in great form making us all laugh and generally being very entertaining!
He also talked a little about The Waterkeepers. Waterkeeper Alliance connects and supports local Waterkeeper programs to provide a voice for waterways and their communities worldwide. To champion clean water and strong communities, Waterkeeper Alliance:
1. Supports and empowers member Waterkeeper organizations to protect communities, ecosystems and water quality;
2. Promotes the Waterkeeper model for watershed protection worldwide; and
3. Advocates for issues common to Waterkeeper programs.

I just started this one and it's very funny.
A sarcasticly funny, deeply moving story of a stranded
passenger whose complaint letter transforms
into a lament for a life gone awry.
From the Publisher:
Bennie Ford, a fifty-three-year-old failed poet turned translator, is traveling to his estranged daughter’s wedding when his flight is canceled. Stuck with thousands of fuming passengers in the purgatory of O’Hare Airport, he watches the clock tick and realizes that he will miss the ceremony. Frustrated, irate, and helpless, Bennie does the only thing he can: he starts to write a letter. But what begins as a hilariously excoriating demand for a refund soon becomes a cri de coeur of a life misspent, talent wasted, opportunities botched, and happiness lost. A man both sinned against and sinning, Bennie pens his letter in a voice that is a marvel of lacerating wit directed at himself and at others, heart-on-sleeve emotion, and wide-ranging erudition, underlined by a consistent groundnote of regret for the actions of a lifetime—and all of it is propelled by the fading hope that if he could just make it to the wedding, he might have a chance to do something right.
