Bruce Cockburn – Slice O Life - at the Classic Theatre

That is right Bruce Cockburn will be playing at the Classic Theatre this coming Monday! There still maybe tickets but call the Classic Theatre soon!

Bruce Cockburn - Folk / Rock

Date: November 16, 2009
Show Time: 8pm
Tickets - $50 Advance $55 door

Bruce Cockburn – Slice O Life

The best live albums create the illusion of being there, witnessing an artist in a memorable performance. Bruce Cockburn has recorded three previous live recordings: Circles in the Stream (1977), Live (1990) and You Pay Your Money and You Take Your Chance (1997), each critically acclaimed and featuring Cockburn in concert with a backing band. Now, the celebrated musician-activist delivers something new: his first-ever live solo album.

Recorded last spring over a series of dates in the northeastern United States and one in Quebec, Slice O Life is a double CD that showcases a cross-section of Cockburn’s finest songs and some of his most dazzling guitar work. The album, produced by longtime associate Colin Linden, also includes one new song, “City is Hungry,” three tracks recorded at sound checks on the tour and some between-song banter that shows Cockburn to be both a quick wit and an engaging storyteller.

Slice O Life features such hits as Cockburn’s controversial “If I Had a Rocket Launcher,” his classic “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” and his breakthrough “Wondering Where the Lions Are,” which he rightly quips may be the only song ever to make the Billboard chart that includes the word “petroglyph.” Originally recorded with a full band, these and other songs like “World of Wonders” have been rearranged and performed on acoustic guitar—often with stunning results. In particular, the polyrhythmic solo on “Rocket Launcher,” full of complex, cascading notes, is especially mesmerizing.

Besides the hits, the album recasts lesser-known songs such as “Wait No More” and “Celestial Horses,” both originally featured on Cockburn’s 2003 album You’ve Never Seen Everything, in a dramatic new light. The latter, full of slow, haunting reverb, now seems like an overlooked psych-folk masterpiece, while the former, played in a fast, bluesy drone on a Dobro guitar, takes on a compelling urgency. Similarly on “Tibetan Side of Town,” Cockburn’s single guitar conveys a full, rich accompaniment—fluid, jazzy treble notes and Big Bill Broonzy-style droning bass notes—for his vivid tale of sensory nights in Katmandu.

Cockburn has often cited the influence of the blues on his music, especially the work of country-blues pioneers like Mississippi John Hurt. The blues tinge shines through in several other performances on Slice O Life, including Cockburn’s gut-wrenching rendition of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Soul of a Man” and “City is Hungry,” an hypnotic urban blues number in which Cockburn warns “hear that rumbling underground/better think twice before you go downtown.”

Meanwhile, the sound checks and introductions to songs reveal another side of the award-winning artist. One sound check involves Cockburn jamming wildly on his 12-string guitar before segueing into “The Trains Don’t Go There Anymore,” a rare track he co-wrote in the 1960s with Ottawa poet Bill Hawkins. Cockburn’s humor comes across in anecdotes about panhandlers who claim to know his music and a mercenary who once offered him a summer job as a gun-runner while he was a student at Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music.

Fortunately for us, Cockburn turned down the job and stuck with music. Over 35 years, the Ottawa-born musician has recorded almost as many albums while earning respect for his charitable and activist work. “My job is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper, in the pulling of notes out of metal,” Cockburn said when he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2001. He was also made an Officer of the Order of Canada and has been the recipient of honorary degrees in Letters and Music from several North American universities, including Berklee and Toronto’s York University. His many other awards have included the Tenco Award for Lifetime Achievement in Italy and 20 gold and platinum awards in Canada.

As a songwriter, Cockburn is revered by fans and musicians alike. His songs have been covered by such diverse artists as Elbow, Jimmy Buffett, Judy Collins, the Skydiggers, Anne Murray, Third World, Chet Atkins, k.d. lang, Barenaked Ladies, Maria Muldaur and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia. As a guitarist, he is considered among the world’s best. The New York Times called Cockburn a “virtuoso on guitar,” while Acoustic Guitar magazine placed him in the esteemed company of Andrés Segovia, Bill Frisell and Django Reinhardt. With Slice O Life, all of Cockburn’s formidable gifts are on full display.

Cool upcoming Events in Our Community

I sometimes forget how active a community we are lucky to live in! There always seems to be something going on, and things to do. So here are a few cool upcoming events:

The Arrogant Worms will be play at the Classic Theatre this Friday October 2nd, 2009! The show starts at 8:00pm and tickets are $30 Advance $35 door, plus you can now order your tickets online!!

If you haven't seen these guys before you need to come out to the Classic and catch their show!

Three quarters of a quarter of a century ago, something magnificent happened in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Sensing a desperate public need for musical comedy, The Arrogant Worms was formed. The Arrogant Worms began as a comedy troupe performing songs and sketches on the campus radio station in 1991. As the live show developed, the songs delighted the audience. The sketches - not so much.It began as a hobby, making fun of a big dumb world. Luckily, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have plenty to sing about. The shows are fast, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. Their appeal has earned them fans from kids to parents to grandparents to Princess Leia.

Thanks for the all the fish!

So it has been a hell of a few weeks, with trying to finish up the build and the lighting for the Classic Theatres production of the "Sound of Music"! Also a good friend of ours and the Costume Designer for the "SOM" was in an car accident last Wed night. So it was so nice of the City to leave a lovely present for us after cleaning the snow from the streets last night. Thanks for taking the time guys!

So now for an update on "Old City Hall". Well first off Jenn is reading the book first. After much grumbling I finally had to agreed with her that I just did not have the time to start reading the book(theatre build to do), so I handed it over to Jenn. Luckily she is a fast reader...really fast so I should have it by this weekend. Oh and New Liskeard gets a brief mention in the book as well. Also "Old City Hall" is freaking amazing!!

Have a great book release tomorrow Robert!

"An amazing debut...this one has winner written all over it." - Nelson Demille

"Breathtaking.... A tightly woven spiderweb of a plot and a rich cast of characters make this a truly gripping read...Robert Rotenberg does for Toronto what Ian Rankin does for Edinburgh." - Jeffery Deaver

As a side note Jeffery Deaver is not known for giving out cover blurbs!!

Now if I can just finish the set for the Classic Theatre's production of "The Sound of Music"!!

Just a rainny Tuesday Morning in Feb!!

So the road coming in was not to bad, but we did call Mark and asked him to open the store for us just in case we didn't make it in.(Just a little freezing rain)

It has been a pretty quite morning, so here is a list of music that Jenn and I have been listening to lately. Just because Music, Coffee & books go so well together!

Fist up is Joel Plaskett album La De Da. Thank you Heather and Mark for tuning us on to Joel's music.

Michael Franti & Spearhead - all Rebel Rockers. This is a great CD! It is full of songs that are very upbeat and with some great lyrics. Radio Paradise has beening playing their stuff a lot lately. Luckily our friends Leigh and Temma gave us a copy for Christmas. Thanks guys!

Far End of Summer by David Francey. Ok so CBC radio was playing one of David's songs last week on the morning show. I missed who the name of the artist and album but loved the song and I remembered that it had February & Drive in the title. Jenn thought it might be February & morning. Well we were both wrong...kinda...the song title was actually "February Morning Drive". I love the fact that CBC plays music you wouldn't normally hear on other radio stations! Great Folk album by the way.

Soul Jazz Orchestra - Freedom No Go Die has been in my CD player a lot lately as well. Phil and Steven two locals are both members in the band. Souljazz also has a new CD out! Freedom No Go Die is available at Chat Noir Books. I am waiting to her from Phil to see if we can get some of the new CDs.

I finally also got a copy of Kim Barlow's Cd Luckyburden. Thank you Garnet and Brian for the "Yukon Tunes" Cd. Kim is another musician I would love to see at the Classic...actually I would to see all these guys at the Classic!

Survive!

We mention a few month's ago that Les Stroud(Host of Survivorman)had a book coming out called "Survive!" It has been no surprise that Les's book has done very well in our area considering that he is somewhat of a local celebrity. So if you are traveling abroad or at home this is the book that will give you the essential skills and tactics to get you out of anywhere alive. So if you didn't get a copy at Christmas this is your chance since we just got a new batch of Les's books in stock.

Jenn and I were able to catch Les's Music show at the Classic Theatre last year which was just an amazing mixture of music, lights and video. We were hoping to get the chance to talk to him after the show and see if he might be interested in doing a book signing at the store. Unfortunately that didn't happen but we are still working on it.

On a side note, if you checked out last month's issue of "Outpost" Laura Bombier( Award Winning Toronto-based photographer)had an article called Shutterstop. And the guy in photo is none other then Les Stroud, which is no surprise since Laura is currently travel with Discovery Channel's Survivorman and Shark Week.

Also in the same issue Outpost also has a really great review on on "Survive!

You’re alone in the forest on a fine autumn day with nothing but a multitool. You’re stuck there for a week. Should you be more worried about finding a source of uncontaminated water or about a bear that might be in the area? Neither, says Les Stroud. The bear will most likely avoid you, and dehydration will affect you faster than parasites in untreated water. Your bigger worry should be shelter—the daytime might be nice, but it’s likely going to be cold at night. And that’s just the beginning.

The concept of Survivorman is simple: left in a remote location, Les must survive for seven days on his own without food, water or equipment. Now, he shares his expert knowledge inSurvive!, a fully illustrated guide based on his experiences on six continents and filled with field-tested advice. Many books on survival are culled from Second World War–era training techniques that are out-of-date or just plain wrong. Survive! debunks these dated myths, exploring basic and advanced tactics that show you how to cope in any survival situation.

Brought to life with Les’s own anecdotes and the tales of others, Survive! is the perfect manual for anyone -- from beginner to armchair traveller to seasoned explorer -- who wants to meet nature’s dangers with confidence. As Les writes, “If you believe you can make it through the bad times, and you are not intimidated by the forces of nature, you will markedly increase your chances of survival.”>/p>

SURVIVE! includes detailed information on the following:
• preparing for survival, mentally and physically
• fire-making techniques
• basic survival kit components
• finding, collecting and making water
• sources of food
• types of shelter
